Angela Fisher
*1991, Vienna. Lives and works in Vienna.

It wouldn’t be entirely correct to describe Angela Fisher’s paintings and sculptures as kinetic art. And yet when one observes them they give the impression of moving more and more. For the artist, who at the time of writing is in her first year as a student of Heimo Zobernig at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts, forms the surfaces of her works in such a way that they glimmer and glow. Her preferred medium for achieving this is car paint which she applies to her objects in a very special way: she lightens areas that should actually be darker as a result of their position, creating illusionistic effects that constantly change as the viewer moves around the sculpture. Accordingly, the works of the artist are not so easy to capture visually. ‚In confronting the work the observer is active. If he changes his position he changes the angle, his viewpoint, opening himself up to new “layers”, new perspectives, new viewpoints,’ she says. ‘Because, in the spatial sense, every piece of visual information is seen ambiguously. And I find this perceptual complexity highly intriguing, it can be developed infinitely.’
In her picture Untitled (2016) the grid becomes the bearer of this glimmering effect. Fisher creates this by combining blue metallic car paint with plastic particles in the form of white technopolymer. She has a general preference for technological materials and also enjoys using carbon which is, for example, often used in space flight or shipbuilding. ‘I try to create traditional sculpture by using the latest materials in a contemporary way,’ she says.2 She takes the titles of her works (such as Investiere in Geschwindigkeit, 2016, or Rasender Stillstand, 2016) from literature that is important for her art – from books by writers such as Paul Virilio or Hartmut Rosa who have repeatedly addressed the notion – and the (social) perception – of time.
The basic forms of her sculptures are made from a far more traditional material –wood. ‘When I combine traditional and an innovative material the past and the future collide,’ says Fisher.3 This results in forms which emerge as if by coincidence and yet which in their materiality and surface finish appear perfect.
